Laying pavers

How to lay pavers — the basics

A quick overview of a standard paver install. For driveways and load-bearing areas, use a compacted road base; for patios and paths, a sand or crushed-rock bed is usually enough.

1

Excavate & base

Dig out to depth and lay a compacted crushed-rock / road base — deeper for driveways.

2

Bedding sand

Screed a level layer of bedding sand (about 30mm) over the compacted base.

3

Lay & cut

Lay pavers to your pattern with even joints, cutting edges to fit and keeping everything level.

4

Joint & seal

Sweep jointing sand into the gaps, compact, and seal natural stone to protect against stains.

Paver FAQs

Outdoor paver questions, answered

What is the best paver for a Melbourne backyard?
For most Melbourne patios and courtyards, bluestone gives a classic modern look while travertine is warm and cool underfoot. For driveways, choose driveway-rated concrete pavers for value or granite for maximum durability. Match the paver to how the area will be used and the style you want.
Bluestone vs travertine — which should I choose?
Bluestone is a dense charcoal-grey basalt with a sleek, contemporary look and excellent durability. Travertine is a warm cream/beige natural stone that stays cooler underfoot and is naturally slip-resistant, which makes it a favourite around pools. Both suit patios; pick bluestone for a modern look and travertine for a warmer, Mediterranean feel.
Which pavers are best for a driveway?
Driveways need load-rated pavers over a compacted road base. Concrete pavers are the most cost-effective driveway option and come in many colours and sizes, while granite is the toughest natural stone. Permeable concrete pavers are ideal if you need drainage or have to meet permeability requirements.
Are your pavers slip-resistant?
Slip resistance depends on the finish. Sawn or honed bluestone, flamed granite and tumbled travertine all offer good grip for outdoor and pool areas. Ask our team for the right finish for wet areas and pool surrounds.
How many pavers do I need?
Measure the length and width of your area in metres and multiply to get the square metres, then add about 10% for cuts, wastage and future repairs. For irregular shapes, split the area into rectangles and add them up, or call us and we'll help you order the right quantity.
Do you deliver pavers, or can I pick up?
Both. You can pick up from our Bayswater yard at 3/5 Newcastle Rd, or we deliver pavers on pallets across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. Order online or call for a delivery quote on larger loads.
Do natural stone pavers need sealing?
Sealing natural stone such as bluestone, travertine and limestone is recommended — it helps protect against stains and makes cleaning easier, especially around pools and outdoor kitchens. Concrete pavers can also be sealed to lock in colour.
What do I need to lay pavers?
You'll need a compacted road base (deeper for driveways), bedding sand, jointing sand and edging to hold everything in place — all available in the same order. See our laying guide above for the steps.
